Octave isn't real-time capable. Maybe your OS's thread manager sets programs into an "energy saving" state when you lock out that slows down your calculations?
If that is the case, I'm not sure if there is anything Octave can't do about this.

You could maybe try changing your OS energy settings or changing the priority of the Octave process and check if that makes any difference.

Do you have a less complicated objective function that doesn't use columns?

I am currently working with the genetic algorithm of the package attached you will find some code that I used. the thing is once I lcok my account (Ctrl+Alt+Del) or even when the display shuts off the program returns complete nonsense. i.e. continuosly values above the declared time limit. once I log in the values are returned without fault
additionally I have :
-extended the used function for dimensions greater than 2 (attached as well)
-modified _ga_problem_.m in line 22 to state.StartTime=clock(), declared state.Time in the following line with zero(1,6), set state.Time with etime(clock(),state.StartTime)
-altered the TimeLimit in line 31 of _ga_stop_.m to state.Time and
-edited output.time to state.Time in l. 36 of _ga_problem_return_variables_.m

Has any of the maintainers any idea as to who this behaviour occurs?
