Please, consider the new patch attached to this bug report, instead of the patch initially attached. This new patch avoids a memory allocation problem, caused by a misplaced call to pcre2_match_data_free.

The strings package currently relies on the old (and mostly unmaintained) PCRE library.

The patch attached to this bug report migrates the code in src/pcregex.cc to the new PCRE2 library.

Debian is aiming at removing the old PCRE library from its next release. For more background, see:
