This might be due to an error in the graphics drivers that are used.
Does it work correctly if you disable "Accelerate 3D graphics" in the Virtual Machine Settings ("Hardware" tab -> "Display" section)?

The softwe runs in vmware player 16.1 using windows 10, 64 bit I7 9700 32 GB.

The simple command:

x=rand(1,10);
plot(x)

produces a plot which has a frame that does not fit the plot itself. This error does not occur using octave 6.1 running under windows 10.
