P.S.: This "canberra" stuff is more a warning and can be avoided for the optics

Bernhard, that is nice to hear that you could solve your issue using Flatpak.

The situation is not fully clear to me, as Ubuntu 18.04 ships Octave 4.2.2 by default https://packages.ubuntu.com/bionic/octave maybe you ran Octave 5.2.0 using a snap package https://snapcraft.io/octave without knowing about your luck? 🤔

If someone wants to investigate this further, please reopen this report.

Closing as fixed.

Hi Kai, Thanks for your quick reply. Your result prompted me to uninstall and reinstall Octave 5.2.0 (with Flatpak) and that fixed the problem.

Not sure what happened, but I had been using Octave for months and today after a routine system prompted software update it failed as described below.

I'm using Ubuntu 18.04. The problem manifested using both GUI and the command line. graphics_tookit() produced ans = qt

It seems to be fine now, but when I launch it with:
flatpak run org.octave.Octave

I receive the duplicate message:
Gtk-Message: 18:51:16.444: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"
Gtk-Message: 18:51:16.444: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"

Thank you for the bug report.  For me your example works flawlessly.  Can you be more verbose about your GNU/Linux setup?

- Which distribution is used?
- How was Octave installed? (default pkg manager, Flatpak, ...)
- Do you use the GUI or the command-line?
- What is the output of

graphics_toolkit ()

octave:1> x = -10:0.1:10; # Create an evenly-spaced vector from -10..10
octave:2> y = sin (x);    # y is also a vector
octave:3> plot (x, y);
fatal: caught signal Aborted -- stopping myself...
