Ah. Thank you for the info.

I'm going to close as fixed in the Octave 6.

The pkg rebuild doesnt even need to run in octave 6, so this issue will go away

that would just leave the font update which if doesnt get run here, will run when octave runs.

Would it make sense to split the post-install script and call the four steps outlined in comment #5 in separate installation steps? Each of these could have their separate time out.
That way the other installation steps might still have a chance to run even if one of them failed or got stuck...

today this host just pings fine for me. Not sure whether what I saw yesterday was a local issue or a transient issue with that host.

No I have not installed or compiled any octave-6 or later versions.

Running the post-install.bat from the cmd prompt it does run to completion, creating a working octave_packages, at the end of the script. However the script had to wait quite long here:

==> Updating trust database...
gpg: marginals needed: 3  completes needed: 1  trust model: pgp
gpg: depth: 0  valid:   1  signed:   4  trust: 0-, 0q, 0n, 0m, 0f, 1u
gpg: depth: 1  valid:   4  signed:   3  trust: 0-, 0q, 0n, 4m, 0f, 0u
gpg: depth: 2  valid:   3  signed:   0  trust: 3-, 0q, 0n, 0m, 0f, 0u
gpg: refreshing 8 keys from hkps://hkps.pool.sks-keyservers.net

Eventually it did succeed in retrieving these keys, maybe that is what triggered the time out.

Thats probally the place that the time is most variable.

I think I did increase the timeout at one stage from the original 30 secs.
But perhaps something bigger should be added or no timeout at all.

I was original hesitant to have no timeout as at that point it could potentally sit there forever. But perhaps that not a valid reason -  if something failed it would likely kick out of post-install script anyway

Ah, if that's the case, then maybe it tends to time out on systems that have too many fonts installed, where fc-cache takes too long?

My guess is for whatever reason the post install script timed out before it had finished during the install

nsExec::Exec /TIMEOUT=60000 '"\$1\\post-install.bat"'

So if its not finished after a minute of running it terinates the script and continues

In that minute, it (in order):
- creates qt.conf
- runs the msys2 envirnment initialization
- fc-cache update
- package rebuild

I think we may have been similar reports on other installer versions - where its been in stalled but no packages are shown.

AFAIR I didn't hit this issue when I installed Octave-5.2.0 using that same installer downloaded from the ftp site, back in mid-February.

Octave-5.2.0 for Windows has been downloaded and used quite a bit already, as judged by the "Release" tag contents in many bug reports since then. Til now we hadn't seen this issue being reported so although I don't doubt your observations I'm inclined to suspect it's rather some local issue.

(Wild guess) could there be an Octave-6.0.0 somewhere in your path that fools the installer?
Did you see a message somewhere along the lines of "running post-install tasks"?
It's the very last line in post-install.bat where the "pkg rebuild"  command is issued in case of Octave < 6.

That's the time stamp of the installer, so yeah it looks like the file was not rewritten as it was supposed to have done. Someone involved with building and testing the Windows installer will have to take a look at this.

yes I used this installer, octave-5.2.0_1-w64-installer.exe, size 304 MB (318,823,391 bytes)

The time stamp of the octave_packages file is 6-Feb-2020 10:54

Are you sure that you used the .exe installer, and not the portable .zip distribution? As I understand it, the .exe installer is supposed to run a script during the install to rewrite that file. If it didn't run that step, then there may be a bug in the installer. What is the timestamp on the octave_packages file?

I installed octave-5.2.0 from the windows installer octave-5.2.0_1-w64-installer.exe, into dir c:/install/octave-5.2.0. Installation works fine, I launch octave GUI, and then I type pkg load io, and get this error:

>> pkg load io
warning: addpath: __OH__/share/octave/packages/io-2.4.13: No such file or directory
warning: called from
    load_packages_and_dependencies at line 48 column 5
    load_packages at line 47 column 3
pkg at line 461 column 7

Indeed in "C:\install\Octave-5.2.0\mingw64\share\octave\octave_packages"

There are these lines for the io package.

# name: dir
# type: sq_string
# elements: 1
# length: 38
__OH__/share/octave/packages/io-2.4.13

Is this the way it is intended to be?
