Might as well push it. I expect there might be an RC2 candidate where this would get captured.

I hope it is still time push the french translation (attached) and will do so if no one opposes.

I didn't check the translations in context and there are probably many oddities but I think this is better than nothing.

Jun, thank you very much for the translation.
I have pushed your patch with changeset http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/f4604e382ab0 and added you to the list of translators.

I tried to complete most of the simplified Chinese translation.
In addition to the untranslated part, some translation not good enough have been fixed. The diff file zh_CN.diff is attached here.

@emmanuel: In comment #28 you said that you had the french translation files ready to be submitted. The only thing you need to do now is to upload the modified fr_FR.ts file here, so that we can review your work and check it in.

I don't know how long from now the 6.1 version will be released, but it would be good to have the french translation files updated on time.

Here are doap and appdata.xml files with NL translation included.

I have the feeling that these translations are also somewhere in the nl_NL.ts file, but maybe I'm confused. They look familiar anyway.

I see that jwe checked in a changeset where he corrected "persistant" to "persistent" in the code (https://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/ec769a7ab9fb).

Could regenerate the .ts files to capture that, although its not a big deal since the word should get translated and won't appear in a different language as-is.

Since Octave 5, we have partially translated project descriptions in "octave.doap" and "etc/icons/org.octave.Octave.appdata.xml".
Should we call for a translation of these files to more languages, too?

Additional Dutch spelling & translation fixes.

As to the untranslated text, on L. 4443 in nl_NL.ts I see "persistant" where I think that should read "persistent" (but I'm not a native English speaker)

I noted 4 or so additional spelling errors (cause: I have a tricky keyboard here but it's there for a good reason), I'll fix those later today.
Shall I push those fixes myself or will you if I supply a cset?

@Torsten:

1. Sorry for the accelerators, can you fix those? During translation some accelerators "loose" their original characters (AFAIU).
FTR, this has probably happened in earlier translation campaigns as well, but I never got feedback on it.

2. Yes please, replace "PRN" with my full name (& optionally email). PRN is an internal name I use or local development, is probably somewhere in an .hgrc file I suppose.

@Philip: Thank you for the patch. I don't know whether updating the language file might introduce "unfinished" tags.

But I can see some warnings on possibly missing accelerators "&". Is it intended that some translated menu entries do not have accelerators? And the "user" of the patch is just "PRN", shall I update this to your complete name and mail before pushing?

French translation file is now ready: reviewed & modified.

QT linguistic wasn't so intuitive ... and for some reason coudn't commit translations in the interface. I did it directly in the XML file.

FYI: Corrected mainly lots of typo and tried to comply with the context. However a second check is needed.

Finaly were shall I drop the translation file?
Thanks

@Torsten: I saw the e-mail to the Octave Maintainer's list announcing that strings were ready for translation, and pointing to this bug report. Did you e-mail the translators individually as well? Some of them don't follow the Maintainer's list, or may have missed it. The list of translators is in libgui/languages/translators.

# Below Octave GUI translators are listed with their e-mails
# to be able to inform them about generic translation file changes.
# The generic file that can be used as a template for new
# translation files is en_US.ts

I think the German translation is almost finished. I used grep to find 20 translations which still have the unfinished tag, but appear to have translations. I've attached the list to the bug report as the file de_DE.unfinished.list. It is short enough that I can reproduce it below as well.

There was a typo revealed by the mk_spellchecker + change of the check-in message. Maybe a note: I tried to validate by clicking around in the GUI. I have found maybe 75% (e.g. some of the translations are also error messages).

Changeset http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/5ca326b3c0d5 fixes the translation issues related to the new symbolic constants for the prefs. There are no new translations required, thus all other translation files will be updated after the translations are complete.

Still open issues:

 • Buttons in the pref dialog (at least in nl)
 • New styles in the diff lexer (for languages that do not have a scintilla translation)

Building on the suggestion by Philip, I wrote two Perl scripts that should be useful for spellchecking the translations.

The usage is

script.pl filename.ts

and the results are sent to stdout so they can be redirected to a file or piped into another program.

The script mk_spellcheck_word_list.pl prints out each unique word found in the translation files on a separate line. This could be piped in to a command-line spellchecker such as aspell.

The script mk_spellcheck_translation_list.pl prints out each translation on it's own line. This might be useful to load in to a word processor and quickly look for red indicating a misspelling.

Thanks arb,
there may well be more typos looming (in this translation round I spotted and fixed a few others that were also in 5.1.0). It's hard to get meaningful results from a spell checker with XML files ...

That is, you got me thinking - a regexp along the lines of:

transl = strjoin (cell2mat (regexp (txt, 'translation>(*.?)</translation', "tokens")), " ")
## followed by:
transl = strrep (transl, "&", "&")
## plus also strrep < <, &gt >, ; " ", &apos '; and maybe more

got me something that I could write to disk and check in my word processor, giving me several other typos.
But it's still a bit messy.

Additional cset (to be pushed after the one by arb) attached.

Regarding the "unfinished" tags, I guess there were left in the files by accident. However, just to be sure, it would be nice if the translators could check the related translations and remove the tag if the translation is correct.

yep - smells a bit like a const expansion. example:

./libgui/src/gui-preferences-ws.h

const QStringList
ws_color_names (QStringList ()

Mon 30 Dec 2019 05:26:38 PM UTC, comment #9:

I have the same question as Philip: Do stale "unfinished" tags matter? Should we ask translators to verify these one last time and then remove the "unfinished" tag? Or should we just remove the tag from translations where there is clearly some translated text and assume it was mostly accidental that the "unfinished" tag wasn't cleared? Clearing these tags can be done automatically by a little Perl scripting.

Mon 30 Dec 2019 04:56:40 PM UTC, comment #8:

The untranslated strings might be because we forgot to mark them in the code. That should be easy to check, although it does depend on user's like Philip digging in to menus and finding which items are untranslated. Then someone has to find the code in question in libgui and verify whether there is a translation mark around the strings.

In the past we have also had some trouble with generic Qt widgets (like the Search widget) where the strings to be translated actually reside in the Qt libraries. They should be marked for translation there, and as long as the user has installed the language files for the Qt libraries themselves, then it should work.

A third possibility that Torsten suggested is the move to symbolic constants.

de_DE.ts

I can confirm there are untranslated textstrings in "Preferences":

1.) Command => Command Window Colors
2.) Variable Editor => Variable Editor Colors
3.) Workspace => Colors for variable attributes

although they are translated in de_DE.ts

Philip, thanks for the second try, looks much better now, the related changeset will follow soon.

I will have a look at the untranslated text strings. This might also be related to moving literal strings into symbolic constants for the preferences.

@Rik: With a simple regexp I got 73 'type="unfinished"'tags in nl_NL.ts but only 47 of them were for lacking translations, the rest were stale tags with translations. So that matches your perl script :-)

@Torsten: 2nd try attached. Hopefully this one is better.

Do stale 'type="unfinished"' tags matter anyway?

I found several untranslated text string here and there in the GUI. I'll try to enumerate:

Workspace:
RMB on a column header, then I get a popup with "Class/Dimension/Value/Attribute"

Documentation:
In the text (contents) subpane the header says "Next" "Up" "Contents" ...

Preferences:
-general-
At the Preferences status bar there's still untranslated "OK" "Apply" "Cancel"
Command tab:
Under colors I still see "Foreground" "Background""Selection""Cursor".
Editor tab:
Tab position still "Top" "Bottom" "Left" "Right"
Editor styles:"Removed removing patch" etc ==> I have no idea what that means, could be my ignorance but therefore I wouldn't know how to translate

IIRC we've discussed some of this before, ISTR you mentioned then that several of those texts were too deep in QT to be translated.

Sorry for that. OK I'll make a new one later this weekend.

(I "hg pull && hg updated"-ed and copied the entire tree over, from where I edited the .ts file. The parent ID is different because I also created csets for pkg.m in that source tree, the .ts files should have been untouched then.)

Philip, thanks for the patch. Unfortunately, nearly every hunk fails when trying to apply it. The parent ID of your patch is 2112f122ff4d, which I can't find in the logs. The parent should be 2b78bc0ef3c5 or a later changeset.

Dutch translation.
I've removed quite a few stale 'type="unfinished"' tags and tried to consistently use "map" rather than "directory".
Yet for many terms there's simply no matching or fitting Dutch translation at all (e.g., "Variable editor") and for several others the translations remain itchy.

This bug report is for updating the translation of the gui for the upcoming release 6.1.0. I am going to push a changeset where missing or changed strings from the gui are added to the translation files.

Please upload the completed translation files (*.ts) in this bug report.
