about "qttranslations module built by mxe-octave for the Windows bundle", a new bug has been reported: #57679.

Felipe G. Nievinski <fgnievinski>
Tue 26 Feb 2019 10:12:54 PM UTC, comment #38:

On my Debian system, the Qt core translations are in the package 'qttranslations5-l10n'. This package is installed by default when any Qt 5 libraries are installed, but it can be removed or accidentally not installed if the user doesn't install "Recommends" dependencies.

Is the qttranslations module built by mxe-octave for the Windows bundle? If not, maybe that should be the subject of a new bug report.

I googled for qt language pack and nothing showed up.
Wouldn't it have to be something installed by Octave?

In any case, it's not a a big deal.
It probably would benefit from a separate bug report.

@Felipe: Do you have the language packs for pt, es, de installed?  If not then Qt will probably fall back on en.

@Torsten: I tried several languages (pt, es, de) and the buttons remain in English (the language of my operating system).

@Felipe: in German, the buttons you have mentioned are translated. For which language does the translation fail?

Also dialog buttons (like Save/Cancel or Save/Discard/Cancel) do not seem to be internationalized.

Here is a possible solution:

In the File Browser, the column heading "Name" doesn't seem to be internationalized (or translations are missing in more than one localization) -- confirm?

Yes, open up a separate bug for the appdata info.  We have concentrated mainly on the strings within the Octave code, rather than ancillary files, but it should be done.  We might not get to it in this release though.

I have pushed the Japanese translation with cset
http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/622a148b341f
Thanks for this, Tatsuro.

@Rik: Sorry for the delay, I misunderstood the post and thought it was directly pushed. I am closing the report, leaving the rest of the language files incomplete (as they were already in recent releases).

@alexanderw: Thanks for the translation. The attached patch adds it to appdata.xml.
Can someone please check if this is the right syntax? I tried to replicate what I found here [1].

Should that description (and translations) also be added to octave.doap?

Just a comment with regard to the following inquiry: "I'd still be curious to see if there are tools or processes that could make this whole effort go more smoothly, so translators don't have to wait for developers and vice versa."

I think emailing translators directly was a good move, since many of us don't follow the developers' discussion list.  In the same vein, it'd be useful to update translators twice a year about the release roadmap, so that we can plan and allocate time to contribute for major releases.

Finally, the last call for translations fell on holiday season (Christmas and New Year's), which also coincides with vacations and end of school year for many of us, especially in the southern hemisphere. So I think middle of semester would be a less busy time for almost everybody.

I still intend to contribute, this is just constructive feedback.

Sounds great, I look forward. I will finish the Catalan translations soon after that flatpak pre-release is available, hoping that they (ca_ES translations) will be taken into account for Octave 5.1.0.

I'm not really involved in the translation process, but just wanted to drop a couple pieces of info. Octave did accept a few translation updates and fixes after the first release candidate for Octave 4.4. The first release candidate was published on April 11, 2018, and translations were applied on the stable branch until April 18. The second release candidate was made on April 19. But by far most of the translation changes were made and applied between March 31 and April 9. Rest assured at some point the maintainers will probably want to stop accepting translation patches.

And as far as version numbering, the official release of Octave 5 will be called 5.1.0. The first release candidate will probably be called 5.0.90. The current alpha status is labeled 5.0.1 already. You will probably see 5.0.90 as a flatpak pre-release.

I'd still be curious to see if there are tools or processes that could make this whole effort go more smoothly, so translators don't have to wait for developers and vice versa.

Sat 05 Jan 2019 09:04:32 PM UTC, comment #13:

Is it possible to update the catalan translation in a subsequent release, e.g. 5.0.1 or so?

Asking because I miss the context of many new translation entries, so these would be sort of blind, and most likely wrong, translations, so I prefer to wait until I can understand the context.

In the end, this is because I don't have an easy way to access the stable branch (upcoming Octave 5.0.0 release), other than building myself, and I don't have the time for it, so I will have to wait until Octave 5.0.0 is released, and its corresponding flatpak package is made available.

Philip, thanks for the Dutch translation. I have pushed the cset here: http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/41a36486a9db

At the moment I have no explanation for the missing translation of the button texts in the preferences dialog. The missing translations in the new doc viewer  should be fixed by including the related Qt header files into the scans for translatable strings.

I noted there was a stray "t" in the top of nl_NL.ts that I didn't see in the stable branch because that doesn't build  currently. But the default branch gave me an error.

Revised cset for nl_NL.ts attached.

Attached is nl_NL.ts + a cset relative to stable.

I noted that several strings have no translation.
E.g., in bottom of Preferences Pane: '"OK" "Apply" "Cancel"
Or when a search in the doc pane yields no results: "Your search did not match any documents". Above that is a toolbar text "0 of 0 Hits".
