The patch works perfectly for me. I have a WIP patch that replaces the current toolbar by an uitoolbar, but there is still much work to do. So push your patch, I'll rebase mine.

@Rik: Did you forget to attach the patch?

I've attached a patch that removes the Select mode button on the figure toolbar.  When Octave implements the plotedit function the button can be re-instated.  Marking as "Patch Submitted".

Worse, users know what they expect because the logo is exactly the same as Matlab's selection tool, but nearly nothing happens.

That sounds fine to me, but I am not a UI/UX expert.  Can you ask this question on the Maintainer's list?

If I think about it, it is kind of silly to have a button that doesn't do anything.  It's only confusing because people expect that if they click on it SOME sort of action would be performed.

@Rik: Unselecting a tool is as easy as clicking the correponding button again, so my approach would be to simply remove this button until we have a proper selection tool.

Is there a way to better document this?  That it unselects all the other tools so that the left mouse button is no longer attached to a specific operation such as rotate, zoom, add text, etc.

Thanks for your report.
Yes, this button currently has no effect except unselecting other tools.

The menu bar of a figure includes an arrow. I assume that clicking on that arrow it should activate a plotedit function similar to MATLAB. But nothing happens clicking on the arrow.
