This bug still occurs on Octave 5.1.0 on Opensuse Leap 15.0 with Plasma. First time I launch the open/save file dialog of the editor and change the directory for the first time, Octave freezes for several minutes. After defreezing, it is completely usable until the end of the Octave session.
As in comment #2 I have a mounted NFS share (via samba) too.

No response, asumming this has been fixed in the latest release.  Closing report.

Version 4.2.2 is deprecated and no longer supported.  Please try with the latest stable release which is 5.1.0.  The problem is likely to have been fixed.

I think we have to separate the issues here. The original post is about the file browser widget, right? Is it possible to provide the information as requested in comment #1?

Comment #2 (and also comment #3?) seems to be related to the open file dialog of the editor.

Just to add that everything works fine with 4.4 provided by my system: the file dialog window looks different and does not list network shares.

I also observe something similar (and it might be the same issue that the one reported in bug #52840): If I click on the "Open file" button in the editor, the file selector window opens and becomes unresponsive. After several minutes, it is available and usable again (and this until the end of the Octave session). It seems to be related to mounted NFS shares, see attached screenshot: it's only when the figure responds again that the two NFS shares I have are listed.

Thank you for the bug report. Can you please be more specific with "nothing happens"? What do you click on in the file browser panel? Do you use a single click or a double click? Is the item you click on highlighted? What do you expect should happen that doesn't happen? Can you please attach a small screenshot to show what isn't correct?

Are you able to install and test the current Octave version 4.4.1?

Nothing happens when clicking in the file browser window. Changing directory by using cd works.
