Fixed in this cset (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/b7db401e1a99).  Closing report.

The function sort() uses directions "ascend" and "descend", but issorted uses "ascending" and "descending".  There is no reason not to match the sort() function and Matlab which use the same words.
