OK, I can live with the error message or comment out the last line of doc/interpreter//macros.texi.

You can close this report, thanks.

There's not much that can be done about this. Your makeinfo program is too old to be able to handle the way Octave doc strings are formatted now. Octave doesn't do any kind of runtime feature or version checking of the makeinfo program.

We have discussed this and there was a consensus that the formatting is too important to try to accommodate very old versions of Texinfo, so the codequoteundirected command will stay.

You could patch the file doc/interpreter/macros.texi on your own build if you want to remove the offending command. Otherwise, it is automatically imported into every doc string on every help command.

Do you have other suggestions?

I'm using makeinfo (GNU texinfo) 4.13 and, following bug #52775, the building of the documentation is disabled automatically. However I still get warning messages when the help text is displayed. For example with svd ():

octave> svd
/tmp/octave-help-ch2oIq:114: Unknown command `codequoteundirected'.
warning: print_usage: Texinfo formatting filter exited abnormally
warning: called from
    print_usage at line 74 column 5
warning: print_usage: raw Texinfo source of help text follows...
error: Invalid call to svd.  Correct usage is:

on

 -- S = svd (A)
 -- [U, S, V] = svd (A)
 -- [U, S, V] = svd (A, "econ")
 -- [U, S, V] = svd (A, 0)

Additional help for built-in functions and operators is
available in the online version of the manual.  Use the command
'doc <topic>' to search the manual index.

Help and information about Octave is also available on the WWW
at http://www.octave.org and via the help@octave.org
mailing list.
