I believe the main issue was not the sockets calls, but use of a a file descriptor in most of the code whilst winsock uses a handle.

The lack of sys/socket related feature on windows are obviously origin of the errors.

One idea to overcome this issue to use gnulib implementation of posix headers and libraries.   I have tried this approach but have not gotten the successful results.

The other way is to write windows related parts using the winsock on Windows compiler (MSVC and MinGW). Unfortunately, I do not have knowledge of winsock programming.
