Hello John,

I somehow missed some of these emails, or there have been some delivery issues, and I apologize for that.
I was following the ticket on the website which had no further responses.

I will re-open the ticket and process it tomorrow (Wednesday).

Regards,
 - Assaf

Assaf, I am puzzled.  I have sent you e-mails on 11/1,   11/4,  11/6,  12/6,  12/30 (twice).  What kind of activity are you looking for?

Ok, we'll get on it.  May be a few days, though.

Morning,

I think we have addressed 1, 2, 3, and 5.

I missed one dependency.  That would be
freetype       FTL / GPL          http://www.freetype.org/

Well, nuts, I see I have a problem with change 1.  Anything I do to  add that information to 'configure.ac' results in 'make' leading with these lines:

(CDPATH="${ZSH_VERSION+.}:" && cd . && /bin/sh /root/Downloads/desknet/missing autoheader)
rm -f stamp-h1
touch config.h.in
cd . && /bin/sh ./config.status config.h
config.status: creating config.h
config.status: config.h is unchanged

'make' doesn't crash, although I think it did when tried it on a machine that didn't have 'automake' installed.

Yes, I still want to do it.  I've been busy setting up a couple of pilot classes in Azusa and El Monte school districts.  I haven't yet figured out the significance of the missing autoheader message.

A little puzzled here as to where we stand.

I think I have addressed items 1, 2, 3.  README.kernel gave directions for hacking the kernel so as to get more than 32 events.  That problem has been resolved in the current kernel, so that file is gone, as are the instructions in other files for doing the hack.

The unzipped Vera-Bit-stream font tree has been incorporated into the tarball and no longer requires any particular attention by the user.

Hello John,

Thank you for submitting a new project to host on GNU Savannah.

To beter comply with the GNU Savannah hosting requirements,
I'd ask you address the following:

1.
Add license and copyright information to the "configure.ac" file.
Either GPL, or the GNU All Permissive license ( http://www.gnu.org/prep/maintain/html_node/License-Notices-for-Other-Files.html )
would be fine.

2.
Many files refer to your other project ('classnet').
It would be better to update them: both the project name, and the copyright year (from 2009 to 2014):
   README
   README.kernel
   AUTHORS
src/desknet ( the printed string when doing "-version" )

3. OPTIONAL
The license statement in many of the files is valid, but is formatted in a non-standard way.
Putting the standard boiler-plate text (as it appears in 'src/dnet.c') would be helpful for future users.

4. Regarding the Vera-Bit-stream font license:
From cursory reading it appears the license is very similar to this font license:
   http://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html#IPAFONT
I would have to consult with others regarding this license.
Will have answer soon.

5. OPTIONAL
The tar file you've provided contains many auto-generated files (e.g. 'Configure', 'Makefile' and 'Makefile.in'),
as well as the compiled binary 'src/dnet'  - there is generally no need to put them in the source code repository of the project.

Regards,
 - Assaf

Registration Details

  • Name: Desknet
  • System Name:  desknet
  • Type: non-GNU software and documentation
  • License: GNU General Public License v2 or later

Description:

Desknet is a program that creates a network of 30 workstations, each of which has access to a portion of a common projected display.  A single computer drives the entire network.

Designed for use in school classrooms, the workstations offer practice exercises for addition, subtraction multiplication, division, and keyboarding.  Additionally, with the appropriate data files, students can check their written work from math textbooks on a problem by problem basis.  A rudimentary word processing program allows students to enter, correct, and print hard copies of written essays.

The graphics platform is SDL2; the networking is standard USB; the recommended keyboards use the Logitech unifying receivers.

This project is successor to the existing Classnet project.

Other Software Required:

SDL2  zlib  https://www.libsdl.org/
SDL2-devel  zlib https://www.libsdl.org/
SDL2_ttf  zlib  https://www.libsdl.org/projects/SDL_ttf/
SDL2_ttf-devel  zlib  https://www.libsdl.org/projects/SDL_ttf/
CUPS  GPL https://www.cups.org/
Bitstream Vera  ???  http://www.monotype.com/

Other Comments:

Not sure what to make of check item 5.

Regarding item 6:  To use the Check Your Work routine, the user will need to make an answer file for the text book she is using.  The distribution comes with dummy files; no copyrighted or derivative material is included.  While I think the creation of the answer file falls within fair use, that question reverts to the user who creates it.
