November 16th 2009 in GNU Savannah item 9828: "Submission of gArch
GNU/Linux"

Hi Rafik,

When a project is hosted on GNU Savannah the main developing should
happen here, we do not want to be used as mere mirror or auxiliary
site as you want (For make 2 packages only) so I delete the
submission.

However, we can host individual projects, so free feel to submit
"IceCat for Parabola" and/or "Gnash for Parabola GNU/Linux" if you
want.

Regards.

Linux-libre and IceCat we have to make the package, the rest of them we can get it from Arch.*

¿Why do you want to host Linux-libre Gnash and IceCat on savannah and
not with the rest of the packages?. Host some packges on savannah and
the rest in another place IMO is pointless.

Karl,
We are starting with the distro, organizing the web site, talking with some organizations to get a repo, etc.
Our policies are only free software, thats include we will not use the linux kernel, we will use Linux-libre.

Rafik -- why do you want to upload a few packages?  What good does that do you?  Clearly, you have to have hosting for all the packages, somewhere.  So why split them up?

Besides that, do you have any web pages that state your distro policies?  (Only free software, no blobs, the usual.)

Sylvain,

Clearly, I would not expect savannah-hackers to check each package of a distro.  But if a distro is accepted/listed as free on the GNU web pages, it seems we would not have to.

The disk space/bandwidth criteria is a different story, and that is fine.

However, what remains is that none of the requirements pages talk about distros as far as I can see.  What's needed is not a policy for projects using only some of our features, but a statement about distro hosting that is easier to find than old mail archives.

The only package we will upload are the kernel (Linux-libre) and some other well know as free like IceCat and Gnash. But if that is a problem we can use other server for the package, we need from savannah mainly the task and bug manager.

We don't host distros mainly because we check the licensing, and that represents to much work if it's more than a single project.

The disk-space/bandwidth is not exactly designed for a distro either.

We have accepted projects for distros, but they were used to host distro-specific tools, and no packages.

I don't think we need a policy for projects that only use part of our service. Our only requirement in that regard, is that we don't want to be used a mere mirror for data hosted somewhere else.

I don't know the policy for using savannah trackers only.  Sylvain or anyone, do you have any clarification of distros on savannah in general?

However, it doesn't make sense to me to support uploading only "part" of a distro.  That seems much worse than having the whole thing.

We will not upload the full distro, only some package (like IceCat, Linux-Libre and some parts of the ISO), we will use Savannah like project manager (bugs, taks, etc).

In that case i suggest to add at the hosting requirements page
something like "plese note than we do not host full distributions even
if they are fully free".

Thanks for submitting this and for your work making another free distro, but as far as I know it's savannah's policy not to host full distros.  If that has changed, I'm sure one of the other savannah hackers will speak up.

Best,
Karl
