We think that every non-trivial file which isn't generated automatically somehow should have a copyright&license attached, including makefiles written "by hand". A typical measurement for non-triviality of text is about 10 lines. So its good for the makefile and the man page to have it. For the man page it is even better to actually display the copyright info. Look for example at "man cat". They have a dedicated subsection where they mention the license for the program to the user.

I think the choice for the test queries is a good one. Even if they are pretty short at the moment, they are likely to grow in the life of the project. So it's good for them to have some notice right from the beginning and declaring public domain doesn't consume much space.

The file "data" is a typical example for a generated file. Anybody can reproduce this easily by calling ps. So this one is fine to have no license or copyright.

I approve your project. Enjoy maintaining it.
Good luck.

Thanks for looking at the project.

Should I do that in the man page too, txr.1? How about the Makefile? Is that source?

In the tests/ directory there is test data, which is hopefully exempt from the copyright notice requirement.

What about the test queries under tests? (*.txr files). I'm up to version 011 of the project now, and the query language supports comments. :) I will assign those test queries to the public domain; the notice can say that the data associated with that query is also in the public domain.

I don't see any way to re-submit the tarball, short of starting a new project; I hope it's okay to submit a .tar.gz file under Attach Files in this Task UI.

Anything else?

Hi,

we'd like you to explicitly name the license you use in every source file. As the BSD license is pretty short, I recommend you copy&paste the whole thing as replacement for
"See LICENSE file for licensing".

Registration Details

  • Name: Text Extractor TXR
  • System Name:  txr
  • Type: non-GNU software & documentation
  • License: Modified BSD License

Description:

TXR is a pattern query language for extracting information from text documents, such as configuration files and logs. It provides an alternative approach to traditional multi-stage filtering with tools like awk, sed or perl, and so makes a useful addition to the programmer's or system operator's toolchest.

Other Comments:

Uses lex and yacc.
Scanner relies on flex ``start conditions'' feature.
