Thank you for your work, Yavor!

Our licensing is now cleared up - that's a big step. Now it's time to go on coding.

I'm happy to enter the Savannah!

> New tarball

Thanks.
So, Cython is a code generator, similar to GNU Bison.  Bison has a special exception, because the generated code includes non-trivial parts of Bison itself.  I can't see this in the case of Pyrex/Cython.

If the generated code was considered a "Derivative Work" of Cython, then it would still be possible to redistribute it under any license that is compatible with the Apache License 2.0, provided that the requirements in Clause 4 are met.  (This excludes GPLv2, which would mean that PyHurd cannot use Cython in that hypothetical scenario.)

Project approved; good luck!

Anatoly, I'm waiting for the updated tarball (you said you're working for the copyright notices).

I haven't had the time to look at the Cython issue, but I'll do it soon.

So,do we have any other problems?

I originalkly wrote a rant about not fitting licenses here, but then I googled:

Cython:

"Can I place the output under the BSD licence, or does it have to be the python-licence as well?

Answer: You can use the output of Pyrex/Cython however you like (and license it how you like - be it BSD, public domain, GPL, all rights reserved, whatever).
More details: The Python License is different from the GPL used for GCC, for example. GCC requires a special exception clause for its output as it is linked against the library part of GCC, i.e. against GPL software, which triggers the GPL restrictions.
Pyrex doesn't do anything similar, and linking against Python is not restricted by the Python License, so the output belongs to the User, no other rights or restrictions involved.
Also, all of the copyright holders of Pyrex/Cython stated in mailing list that people are allowed to use the output of Pyrex/Cython however they would like."

No licensing problems through Cython it seems.

Cython is distributed under Apache licence.

Yes, Arne, you are right.
We have to use GPLv2 or later.
I'm working on it.

Some parts of the Hurd are GPLv2 only, because they come directly from Linux (for example drivers), and you know the licensing of Linux (I had another shallow look (I normally just code in Python) into the Hurd code lately - the parts used seem to be from Linux 2.0).

So GPLv3+ isn't possible, since it couldn't be linked to these parts.

So GPLv2+ is the license for PyHurd.

Yes, sorry for the confusion.
What I meant to say is that it has to be under Hurd's license if it is going to be merged into the Hurd distribution at some point (there was a discussion about PyHurd on bug-hurd, IIRC).  Although Hurd's license is GPLv2+, some parts are under GPLv2 only (how is that possible, I can't tell).

I assume the Hurd's libraries are GPLv2-or-later (not GPLv2-only).  In that case, it is perfectly ok for an application that is GPLv3(-or-later) to link against them.  The magic of "or later" ...

Sorry for the long period without action.

I had not looked at the tarball yet, but does your package link against Hurd's libraries?  If so, the license has to be GPLv2 or later, since TTBOMK the Hurd's license cannot be upgraded to GPLv3...

Registration Details

  • Name: PyHurd
  • System Name:  pyhurd
  • Type: non-GNU software & documentation
  • License: GNU General Public License v2 or later (We are currently deciding if we want to use "any GPL", "GPLv2 or later" like (at the moment) the rest of the Hurd or GPLv3 or later. )

Description:

Pythonish GNU/Hurd

PyHurd is an attempt to create full Python binding to the GNU/Hurd API. It will include bindings to various GNU/Hurd libraries and will have ability to create translators with Python.

It is written in Python and Pyrex and requires Cython.

The code is available in the PyThon Package Index:

and in two linked Mercurial repositories (we intend to switch to a savannah Mercurial repository):
- http://freehg.org/u/ArneBab/pyhurd

Other Software Required:

Cython / Pyrex: PSF 2.4 - http://www.cosc.canterbury.ac.nz/greg.ewing/python/Pyrex/

GNU/Hurd: GPLv2 or later - http://www.gnu.org/software/hurd/

Other Comments:

"I read carefully and don't check this one" - nice idea! :)

From the next version on the tarballs will include both gpl-2.0 and gpl-3.0 (as currently we only specify "it's GPL"), until we decide on the version (will be either 2.0 or later like the rest of the Hurd or 3.0). I already modified the tarball creation code in my repository (http://freehg.org/u/ArneBab/pyhurd).

Thank you for your work!
