Hello John,

reviews for GNU software aren't done here. We only throw the switch to "Official GNU" when the project was dubbed a GNU part by the rms. :)

Here is an introduction to the formal evaluation process.
http://www.gnu.org/help/evaluation.html

Good luck.

I have been making some (slow) progress.  Perhaps it is time to revisit the possibility of making this  a Gnu project.  I have put together an initial attempt at proper packages, available at:

http://members.dslextreme.com/users/juanslayton

These should install in the conventional manner.

There are 4 packages reflecting 4 branches of development; two using SVGA and two using ncurses.  The 'classnet' branches accomodate 20 students and are intended for projects involving a whole class.  the 'groupnet' branches are a scaled-down version to accomodate small groups at a 5-student workstation within the class.  If anyone wants to play around with the program at this point, I recommend the groupnet versions, as they are easier to configure.

I am resubmitting a slightly revised general information form as an attachment.

When I retired, I lost my 'lab,' so the latest programs have not had a long term full-scale demo.  It looks like I'll be doing a long-term sub next fall; if it materializes I hope to get my chance, using wireless keyboards at student desks.

John

Hi John,

Reviewing your tarball ...

- no need to have both gpl.txt and COPYING.  Delete gpl.txt.
- the GPLv2+ copyright notices on your files have an old address for the FSF.  Use the address from the current http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-2.0.html.
- please add the same GPL notice or some other free license notice to the files README and README.kernel.

I don't see that any of these are showstoppers, so I've approved the project.  Welcome to savannah and happy hacking.

To offer the package to GNU, see the questionnaire at http://gnu.org/help/evaluation.html.  It's done separately from savannah.

From your description, the overall purpose of the package looks very interesting.  However, as one of the evaluators, I can tell you that a configure script would need to be written.  Also, what is the potential problem with svgalib licensing?  I looked at the web site but did not see a statement of the license and didn't have a chance to look at their actual sources.

Best,

How does one change the projcct type to GNU?

Description:

I apologize if this is a duplicate submission; an earlier attempt seems to have gone off to outer space.

This program uses a single computer to poll 20 keyboards, giving all students in a class simultaneous access to the machine.  Each student has a designated area of a common projected display in which to work. Activities include real-time competition in addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division facts, touch keyboarding, and rudimentary word processing.  A further subroutine allows students to check the accuracy of their math calculations when doing written work from a textbook or worksheet.

The source code is written in C.  The binary is invoked by a shell script from one of 9 directories, each of which maintains records for an entire class.  So the program can serve up to 9 classes.

Dependencies:

Runs under Gnu/Linux with modified 2.6.23 kernel.  May be used with unmodified kernel, but will not support more than 15 keyboards.

svgalib-1.9.25
gcc 4.1.2, GNU Make 3.81, and (possibly) vgalib-devel-1.9.25 for compilation and installation.

At this time (28 Aug 08) there is no configuration file, but a hand written Makefile with make, make install, and make uninstall sems to work tolerably well.

Other Software Required:

gcc
Gnu Make
svgalib-1.9.25
svgalib-devel-1.9.25

ref:  svgalib.org

Looks like maybe a problem with svga licensing; I am working on an alternative that uses ncurses instead of SVGA, but it is less satisfactory in some ways.

Other Comments:

I assume a little common sense with regard to license headers; this program has a gazillion little files.  I think I have covered the important ones.
