One more todo item: create a home page. Please ask -email is unavailable- if you need any help with that.

Yes, I'll put that on my todo list.
It has currenty the following items:

- create a NEWS file
- create a ChangeLog file
- create a Texinfo documentation
which has about the same info as the README

Thank you; I've filed a request about eCos license to licensing@.

Now, GNU Maintainer Information
recommends that all non-trivial files have copyright and license notices;
in your package, README has none; could you add them?
(You could use a simple license for "other files".)

Yes, good point, I messed things up, when I tried to update
the original eCos licence to GPLv3, with the same exception.

Initially the first sentence was
"either version 2 or (at your option) any later version."

and later
"However the source code for this file
must still be made available in accordance with section (3)
of the GNU General Public License v2."

And gnueval asked me to change that to GPLv3, and I should
check that the original licence does contain the "or a later
version"-thing, which it does.

I think the section 3 from v2 corresponds to section 6 from v3.

Would it make sens to change the exception
to something like:

"However the source code for this file
must still be made available in accordance with section (6)
of the GNU General Public License v3."

Thanks.

First, your submission says 'the GPLv2+ + eCos exception',
but your files refer to the GPLv3. By the way, have you ever read
section (3) of the GPLv3? It has nothing to do with distributing
source code. And this is where we come to a dark corner:
how should the eCos exception apply to software under the GPLv3
(and later versions)? Is that section of the GPLv2 still in effect?
But those files are not under the GPLv2 any more.

On the other hand, I can only see your and FSF's copyright
notices in your code; perhaps the FSF will be willing
to re-release it under the LGPLv3+ or some other unambiguous license.

What did gnueval say? What do you think?

Registration Details

  • Name: MemPool library
  • System Name:  mempool
  • Type: non-GNU software and documentation
  • License: GNU General Public License v2 or later (This work is released under the eCos license

The eCos license is a modified version of the well known GNU General Public License (GPL).
The eCos license is officially recognised as a GPL-compatible Free Software License and is
an OSI-approved Open Source License.  An exception clause has been added which limits the
circumstances in which the license applies to other code.  The exception clause is as follows:

As a special exception, if other files instantiate templates or use macros or inline
functions from this file, or you compile this file and link it with other works to produce
a work based on this file, this file does not by itself cause the resulting work to be
covered by the GNU General Public License.  However the source code for this file must
still be made available in accordance with section (3) of the GNU General Public License.
)

Description:

The MemPool library is a stand-alone memory allocation library.
It is a block allocator library that uses a single fixed size memory
pool to allocate variable sized memory blocks, and exports functions
similar to malloc, realloc and free.
It is intended to either simulate low memory targets on GNU/Linux and
other systems, or to completely replace the system memory management.

Other Comments:

Hello,

according to feedback from gnueval I expect MemPool to
shortly become a GNU program.

Therefore I would like to move the project to savanna.gnu.org.

Thanks!
