Adding the capability to use PostScript's \RunLengthDecode filter will be able to decrease the EPS file size significantly when a large number of pixels in the image are similar (for example segmentation maps in astronomy).

Through an option, the user can specify if they want this type of encoding or not. Then it can be applied. Alternatively maybe an algorithm can be found to see if the image is a segmentation map (fixed values) or a noisy image. I would say the first is the best option. Because even in batch processes, it is very clear when a segmentation map is desired and when a noisy image is desired.
