Registration Details

  • Name: GNU Taler
  • System Name:  taler
  • Type: Official GNU software
  • License: GNU Affero General Public License v3 or later (Some components are licensed under other GNU-licenses (GNU GPLv3+, GNU LGPLv3+).)

Description:

Taler is an electronic payment system providing the ability to pay anonymously using digital cash.  Taler consists of a network protocol definition (using a RESTful API over HTTP), a Mint (which creates digital coins), a Wallet (which allows customers to manage, store and spend digital coins), and a Merchant website which allows customers to spend their digital coins.  Naturally, each Merchant is different, but Taler includes code examples to help Merchants integrate Taler as a payment system.

Taler uses Chaum's blind signatures to sign digital coins into existence without allowing the Mint to link the identity of the withdrawing user to the public key of the minted coin. Taler supports fractional payments and unlinkable transactions.

Other Software Required:

GNUnet (GPL)
GNU libmicrohttpd (LGPL)
Postgres (complicated modern BSD-variant, LGPL-compatible)

Other Comments:

RMS declared Taler an official GNU package today.
