Registration Details

  • Name: Unifont
  • System Name:  unifont
  • Type: Official GNU software
  • License: GNU General Public License v2 or later (The source code is covered by GPLv2+.  The font glyphs are covered by GPLv2+, with a font embedding exception.

)

Description:

Unifont is a dual-width bitmapped font that supports The Unicode Standard.  Glyphs are 8 or 16 pixels wide, and 16 pixels tall.  The base Unifont build provides a glyph for every visible code point in the Unicode Basic Multilingual Plane (BMP, or Plane 0).  This covers the first 2^16 = 65,536 code points.  The Unifont version number correlates to a Unicode version number; for example, Unifont 6.3 provides coverage for the Unicode 6.3 Basic Multilingual Plane.

The source package encodes each glyph as a one-line hexadecimal string format invented by Roman Czyborra, along with a script he wrote to convert this data to and from a text file.  The text file format allows editing font glyphs with a plain text editor.

The source package also contains utilities written by Paul Hardy for converting the Unifont hexadecimal format to and from bitmapped graphics files, for editing with a graphics editor.

Scripts originally written by Luis Alejandro González Miranda convert Unifont into a TrueType font.

Other Software Required:

gcc, make, and other GNU utilities standard on GNU/Linux - GPL (http://www.gnu.org)

Perl - GPLv1+ or the Perl Artistic License (http://www.perl.org) - to create the BDF font and text file glyph representations

bdftopcf - Open Source license from The Open Group (http://www.x.org) - to convert BDF font to a PCF font

FontForge - BSD License (http://fontforge.org) - to build the TrueType font

Other Comments:

Source code program files contain GPL license and copyright information.  The package contains plain text raw data files that do not contain any license or copyright information, but an overall license file and copyright information is included with the package.
