Hi,

I understand, such an inter-compatiblity is very important. Hm!

But for the moment I don't want to switch to the 'any later' clause, sorry!

Thank you both for your time!

P.S.
Staying with a fixed version until voting for a new one would be a nice solution in between, I think. But determining who is allowed to vote may be problematic.

All the best to you, too
Rouven

Hi Rouven - Joan asked me to reply here.  Although I understand your position (many people feel the same way), it is indeed a requirement to use "or later" to be hosted on Savannah.  The reason is exactly that we want to ensure maximal inter-compatibility for all projects that host.  A project licensed without "or later" will be automatically incompatible with anything released under the next version of the license -- sharing could not occur in either direction, which defeats the whole purpose of free software.

So if you can't agree with "or later", we'll just have to decline to host, and wish you happy hacking elsewhere.

All the b est,
Karl

P.S. I don't really understand your voting idea, but in any case, we have to take the licenses as they stand, we can't just invent (or accept) new clauses on the fly.  If you want to propose something for a future revision of the GNU licenses, the place to write is licensing@gnu.org.

Hello,

first, thank you for offering me to address my concerns.

I understand that it would be difficult or even impossible to upgrade the license if every copyright holder has to be asked. Nevertheless, I do not want to dual-license my project under a license which I actually do not know.

Though, I might like a license to be upgradable to address new problems like extending license compatibilities. Would it be possible to write a clause which requires more than 50% of the copyright holders to vote for an upgrade while a copyright holder which does not reply for a given time would automatically vote
against an upgrade? These votes, of course, would have to be done for every single file with its different combination of copyright holders. But what if someone does trivial changes to just get a copyright entry with the only intention to succeed the vote?

BTW, is the 'or any later version' clause required for hosting on Savannah?

Regards.

Hello,

after approving your project I realized it doesn't contain the "or any later version" clause in the license notice.

Not adding this clause is problematic.  Would you agree to license your project under the "GNU Affero GPL v3 or later"?

The reason for this is that when we publish the next version of the Affero GPL, it will be important for all Affero GPL-covered programs to advance to that new version. If you don't put this in the files now, the only way to port your program to the next version of the Affero GPL would be to ask each and every copyright holder, and that may be very difficult.

We can explain the issue in more detail if you wish. If you have concerns about "GNU Affero GPL v3 or later", we'd be happy to address them too.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hi,

thank you. Here is the updated tarball including the copyright and license notices for every manually created file greater than 10 lines.

Regards.

Hi,

I'm evaluating the project you submitted for approval in Savannah. While doing so I have noticed a few problems which are described below.

The package you have uploaded contains some files without license text:
    configure.in
    Makefile.am
    ChangeLog
    doc/man/piconfm.1
    doc/man/piconfs.1

Every file more than 10 lines long is considered nontrivial and must include a license notice. For the ChangeLog, you must include the copyright notice at the end of the file.
Please check http://www.gnu.org/prep/maintain/html_node/Copyright-Notices.html for more information, and update your files.

If you are willing to make the changes mentioned above, please provide us with an URL to an updated tarball of your project.  Upon review, we will reconsider your project for inclusion in Savannah.

To help us better keep track of your registration, please use the tracker's web interface by following the link below. Do not reply directly; the registration process is not driven by e-mail, and we will not receive such replies.

Regards.
