Hi Ludovic and Mario,

I am reviewing old open tasks, and this one seems to have been resolved. If the only remaining issue is about font metrics, and these are not copyrighteable, can we close this task?

Alex Fernandez <alexfernandez>
Mon 04 Oct 2010 10:53:25 PM UTC, comment #13:

Please check GNU Ghostscript for the URW afm's. I don't have an exact pointer at hand, sorry. Anyway, we can continue that search offline.  (It's highly debatable whether metrics are copyrightable in the first place; this need not delay project approval.)

Regarding metrics incompatibility, since all these fonts, either from Adobe or URW or derived versions, have changed (both metrics and glyphs) over time and different printers & systems will have different versions, there's no use in worrying about it; perfect compatibility is not possible. So I'd just go with the current version of the declared-free metrics, once we find them ...

Hello!

The files in "fonts/' are the "font metrics" (aka. "AFM"), not the actual fonts.

However, I can't find the AFM files from URW++, nor the freed ones from Adobe.  Karl?

BTW, the URW++ and Adobe fonts are slightly different, though the difference is hardly noticeable, AFAICT.  Does it matter which font metrics Lout uses (URW++ or Adbove), given that GNU/Linux distros typically come with the URW++ fonts, whereas printers may come with Adobe's?

Thanks,
Ludo'.

There are several files in "font".  I don't know what's the case of
each one but please either replace them with the free version Karl is
talking about or update the license notice if these are the ones who
has been freed.

Regards.

Yes, just AFM files, no real problems.  Perhaps a comment
in the header file of the relevant directory would be
enough.

The mailing list already exists, nothing to be done there.  If there are problems with it, I'm sure we'll hear about them in due course :).

As for the nonfree font files, fortunately it's not a serious problem, since there are more-or-less compatible and definitely free versions of the standard 35 PostScript fonts (like Zapf Chancery), originally from URW.  Lout should probably just import the files from there, or the Ghostscript distribution, or some such.  Or if we're just talking about AFM's, Adobe eventually freed those.

Jeff, Ludo, wdyt?

Hello.

> The recent release of version 3.39 hopefully addresses the problems
> you identified.

Files inside man directory don't contains a Copyright notice but an
authorship notice.  If Jeffrey H. Kingston is the Copyright holder of
these files please turn this into a Copyright notice, else please add
a Copyright notice.  By the way, blurb, blurb.short lack this
information too; if you don't want to include the licensing
information there, could you please list these files in the README
files as being under the there aforesaid terms?.

Some files inside font directory contains a like like:

Notice Copyright (c) 1990 Adobe Systems Incorporated.  All Rights Reserved.ITC Zapf Chancery is a registered trademark of International Typeface Corporation.

This would mean these files are proprietary, if so they must be
removed from GNU Savannah; but I may be missing something (Are the
copying permissions stated elsewhere?).  Please provide more
information on this critical issue.

Maybe you should send a support request at
https://savannah.gnu.org/support/?func=additem&group=administration,
this way we make sure the mailing list issue don't get lost when this
item is closed.

Regards and thanks.

Karl: the mailing list archive is available from <http://lists.planix.com/pipermail/lout-users/>.  Could you import it?

We'll take care of the wiki later on.

Thanks!

Hi Ludo -- regarding the mailing list, I can import the archive, assuming you have a big mbox file.

Regarding the wiki, my impression is that the existing GNU wikis are all hosted outside of savannah (and www.gnu.org).  hurd.gnu.org seems to be at the FSF; I suppose we could ask the sysadmins about it.  Another possibility is chapters.gnu.org in Spain, run by Jose and Nacho.  Not sure if they support wikis there.

Hello,

Thanks for your response.

We agree on adding the required headers where they're missing.  I suggest that we go on setting up the project and repository, as you proposed, where we'll fix things.  We'll use SVN.

Besides, what about the mailing list and wiki import issues mentioned in the original request?

Thanks,
Ludo'.

Hi.

I'm evaluating the project you submitted for approval in GNU Savannah.
You can reach the rest Savannah hackers (Staff) in this list:
http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/savannah-hackers-public.

I noticed some issues with the tarball you submited:

Several files lack its copyright & licensing information.

In order to release your project properly and unambiguously under the
GNU GPL, please place copyright notices and permission-to-copy
statements at the beginning of every copyrightable file, usually any
file more than 10 lines long.

In addition, if you haven't already, please include a copy of the
plain text version of the GPL, available from
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.txt, into a file named "COPYING".

For more information, see http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.html.

If some of your files cannot carry such notices (e.g. binary files),
then you can add a README file in the same directory containing the
copyright and license notices. Check
http://www.gnu.org/prep/maintain/html_node/Copyright-Notices.html for
further information.

The GPL FAQ explains why these procedures must be followed.  To learn
why a copy of the GPL must be included with every copy of the code,
for example, see
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#WhyMustIInclude.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At your option we can continue the registration process in the (D)VCS
repository of your choise.  This means I would approve the project
just now provided you agree to fix any remaining or further issue (If
any) as soon as possible.
I will close this task when I can check all is ok but please bear in
mind you must follow the hosting requirements as long as you do use
GNU Savannah.
Regards.
Registration Administration
While this item will be useful to track the registration process, approving or discarding the registration must be done using the specific Group Administration page, accessible only to site administrators, effectively logged as site administrators (superuser):
Registration Details
  • Name: Lout
  • System Name:  lout
  • Type: non-GNU software & documentation
  • License: GNU General Public License v3 or later (Lout is a ~20 year old free software project, originally developed by Jeff Kingston as part of his research activities at the University of Sydney.
Historically, Lout-related resources have been scattered: the tarballs are at <ftp://ftp.cs.usyd.edu.au/jeff/lout/> and mirrored at <http://sourceforge.net/projects/lout/files/>, the mailing list (now defunct) is at <http://lists.planix.com/pipermail/lout-users/>, and a wiki is at <http://lout.sf.net/>.
The goal here would be to move all these resources in one place, and Savannah seems like a good choice.  :-)
There are technical issues, though:
  - We'll want to import the mailing list archive.
  - Ideally, we'd like to import the wiki, but my understanding is that Savannah doesn't officially support Wikis, except perhaps in some cases (e.g., <http://hurd.gnu.org/>).
Any idea whether/how this can be done?)
Description:
Lout is a document formatting system designed and implemented by Jeffrey Kingston at the Basser Department of Computer Science, University of Sydney, Australia.
The system reads a high-level description of a document similar in style to LaTeX and produces a PostScript file which can be printed on most laser printers and graphic display devices. A plain text output option is available, as is a highly experimental PDF output mode (users are encouraged to generate PostScript, then convert to PDF using GhostScript instead.)
Lout is inherently multilingual. Adding new languages is easy. The following languages are currently supported (in alphabetical order): Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish.
