I have installed a new template which is CC 3.0 licensed.

By using this at the top of each content page:
<!--#if expr="! ${template}" --><!--#include virtual="/newfangle/template.shtml" --><!--#else -->

I can get plain html wrapped in a template, which re-includes the content

Sam Liddicott <samjam>
Thu 25 Mar 2010 08:51:47 AM UTC, comment #18:

The template author distributes the template as being CC 3.0 :

http://www.spyka.net/web-templates?index=2

However this is contradicted by the license file within the zip. I suspect they have just forgotten to update the zip file, but have asked them to clarify this.

If you want to describe a feeling of comfort and satisfaction, by all
means say you are “content,” but using the word as a noun to describe
written and other works of authorship adopts an attitude you might
rather avoid... (See
http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/words-to-avoid.html#Content).

>Is it a fact that template cannot be used if the site is hosted on
>savannah?

Yes, it is a fact.

Please replace or remove any material under those terms ASAP and let
me know when done, since they are propietary, non free as in freedom
because they don't gives you the right to share the work.  Savannah is
a free software hosting site, we don't allow propietary software.  And
there are no exeptions.

Please always check whether a work is free before mixing it with a
savannah-hosted software.

I must confess that I hadn't considered presentation templates to be part of the content I was providing.

I was planning to convert this to server-side-includes shtml to draw a clear distinction between the template and the content.

Is it a fact that template cannot be used if the site is hosted on savannah?

Hi, sorry for long delay.

Exaclty, to what files the propietary terms in sv/newfangle/www/css
readme and licence.txt do apply?.  You must replace or remove any
material under those terms, since they are propietary, non free as in
freedom because they don't gives you the right to share the work.

There are another web interface for git:
http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit but usually the CVS repository for
pages is used instead.  See if it fits your needs, if you can help to
implement a GIT repository for web pages please write to
savannah-hackers-public@gnu.org.

Regards.

I have updated git.repo.org and will make it mirror savannah git as soon as I can work out how.

Literate programming being what it is, /newfangle/www/docs/newfange.html is the source code and therefore licensed under the GPL3 and probably does not belong in the docs folder; however other documentation is and will be licensed under an FDL.

I have added the licensing information to /newfangle/www/docs/literate/literate.html (http://repo.or.cz/w/newfangle.git/blob_plain/master:/www/docs/literate/literate.html) - it was in the .lyx document but I had forgotten to regenerate the html; thanks for spotting this.

Thanks very much for your help and guidance.

I guess you could close this task if it were not for the query below:

I note that repo.or.cz has some kind of apache re-write rules (or other trick) so that html documentation can be served directly out of the gitweb interaface with working relative links; e.g.

http://repo.or.cz/w/newfangle.git/blob_plain/master:/www/index.html

but the equivalent doesn't work on Savannah. This URL fails:

http://git.savannah.gnu.org/gitweb/newfangle.git/blob_plain/master:/www/index.html

and the working URL is not a basis for relative links:

http://git.savannah.gnu.org/gitweb/?p=newfangle.git;a=blob_plain;f=www/index.html;hb=1638dc03995f5879f0c4c8aeaac117f4fe1f5dfa

Sorry, I didn't saw until now you attached the tarball, thanks for
reminding me.

I approve the project, it URL will be (HTTP or HTTPS)
sv.gnu.org/p/newfangle, but there are some minor details to be fixed
until I can mark this task (#10103) as finished.

GIT may take an time since you enable it to be fully functional and
then you can import the project, let us know if there is any problem
with GIT migration.

Once it is on Savannah please ethier delete or mark as moved the
project repository in repo.or.cz because Savannah is not a mirror, and
please add (In the Savannah GIT repository) the FDL[1] header (And
copyright notice) to /newfangle/www/docs/newfange.html.  And the
appropiate licensing information to
/newfangle/www/docs/literate/literate.html acording to
http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Terms_of_Use.

I guess /newfangle/www/index.html is an auto generated file from the
web interface of repo.or.cz and will not be on savannah, true?
Savannah have a similar GIT web interface.

Thanks for developing free software.

[1]: You can use any FDL-compatible licence for documentation, note
that if you use the FDL you should include a copy of that licence,
ether in index.html or in a separate section.  The FDL instructions
are in http://www.gnu.org/licenses/fdl.html#addendum.

Could you attach the updated tarball to this tracker?,
https://savannah.gnu.org/task/?10103#attached.

A hacker tellme the past message seems unkind, i'm sorry if it was
unkind, It wasn't meant to offend you, just was a bad copy-paste of
some past and pre-written messages.  Plus, it contains a mistrake: To
list the copyrigth information in README is only needed for images and
other files that can't contain the copyright information inside.

Thanks for being so particular.

I hope I am now compliant.

I have not listed individual copyright holders for literate.lyx in that file or the readme as I don't know who they are individually, but I have included a copyright statement and referred to the license. This seems normal for material copied from Wikipedia.

I hope I've covered everything this time.

- From a past message: "you should put a README file enumerating all
those files, stating it *Copyright holder* and it licence.". I remind
you to state the copyight holder in README and in the literate.lyx
files, else I can't approve the project.

You must put a plain text version of the GPL 3
(http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-3.0.txt) in a file named COPYING, and
optionally (But strongly encouraged), a copy of the CC BY-SA.

The exact name of the files containing the licence(s) is up to you,
but is adviced to be COPYING for the GPL and COPYING.cc-by-sa for the
creative commmons unported atribution share-alike.

Regards!.

Thanks for the ping.

The licensing was in all non-trivial files, but not clearly visible so I've also inserted it nearer the top.

I have also added a readme file.

The tarball URL is:

Hi,

I'm evaluating the project you submitted for approval in Savannah.

Add Licence and Copyright information to all your non trivial files,
that may include HTML, plain text documentationand auto generated
files and build scripts.

As the project contains files than can not contain the Copyright and
licencing information inside it you should put a README file
enumerating all those files, stating it Copyright holder and it
licence.

Note that the tarbal (Or URL) you upload in the registration form is
temporal so we can check if hosting requirements are meet and catch
legal issues early, when project is approved you get acess to GIT,
download area and all other resources savannah provide.

Regards!.
