i changed the stone age menus to have lowercase words for multiword menu items to try to make the separation clearer.  i also made "Submit new" be the first item under "bugs" and reworded a couple of others.  i hope i'll be able to tweak the css to space the items better.

as for css menus, sadly i am not up for making the items of the current menu visible without hovering. if someone else wants to, go for it (and good luck).

closing this, since i don't think anything more will be happening in the foreseeable future ... if there's something else specific to be done, feel free to reply here, though.

thanks,
k

i agree the ui is suboptimal. fixing it in the context of using css menus in the first place is not easy. my only suggestion is to select "stone age menu" on the "my account conf" page. (in fact, i am tempted to think we should make this the default for new accounts.) despite the disparaging name, it has the considerable advantage of making the options for the present page visible.

unrelated, but i also suggest selecting "show feedback in relative position", so that such feedback is normal text that can be selected, doesn't randomly disappear, doesn't overwrite other stuff on the page, etc.

fwiw ...

I had this problem too. When you are on the page showing the list of open bugs (for example https://savannah.gnu.org/support/?group=administration), you expect to see a link to "submit a new issue" (and one for "search issues"). I actually clicked "submit" under the "tasks" pop-up menu before finding it under "support". I expected the list of links with pop-up menus to be taking me to other sections of the site, not related to the bug-tracking section that I was on at the moment.

OK...  I would phrase it this way:

1) go to the project's page on Savannah

2) in the menu across the top, look for the "support" or "bugs" item, which is a pull-down (or auto-pull-down) menu for actions relating to issue tracking

Which seems reasonable to me.

One odd thing:  At least on the man-db page, the "support" and "bugs" items in the top menu seem to have the same subordinate items.  (Though this may be intentional.)

I must be overlooking even more...

I wanted to file a Savannah support request. I easily found "Site Help", "Get Support", but that (apparently) just took me to a page with a list of open issues. Nowhere could I see "submit a new issue". I eventually found that hovering over the "Support" tab at the top of the page pops up a menu that includes a "submit" item, but it took me a while to find it.

I am not saying this is easy or obvious but the expected flow is something like this:

The home page for the man-db project is http://www.nongnu.org/man-db/ .

Browse that page and it displays a link to the Savannah project page https://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/man-db .

The Savannah project page has a link to the bugs page for that project
https://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/?group=man-db .

The project bugs page has a Submit link to submit new bug reports.

Alternatively from the Savannah home page https://savannah.gnu.org/ there is a Search in projects on the left side navigation area.  Typing in man-db there and then searching finds the one man-db project "Database-driven manual pager suite". And of course once there then it is once again looking at the navigation menus to find the Bugs link.

Some of us don't like the hidden menus in the HTML CSS cascading menus.  If you are one of those then you might like to try "My Account Conf" and then checking the Use Stone Age menu feature and Show Feedback in relative position feature. That is how I and some others of us run and it then shows all of the navigation options plainly without the active hover menu cascade. (shrug)

Does this answer your question?

I must be overlooking something, but ...

I was directed to submit a bug via Savannah from another bug tracker.  I assumed that this was no problem, because I have a Savannah account and I'd used it before.  But I've had a devil of a time finding the link that takes me to the "submit a bug" page.

To try to figure this out, I logged in (as user "worley") and then went to the main page (https://savannah.gnu.org/) -- because surely everything that can be done on the site must be accessible from the main page.  But after looking at it fairly carefully, and searching for several potential keywords, I can't find any link to the submit-bug function.

The one exception is the "Get Support" item under "Site Help" in the left-hand navigation area, which sends me to the submit-bug function for "administration".  I can doctor the link URL to get to submit-bug for man-db, which is what I'm looking for.

Now I'm sure I'm wrong, nobody would omit a link to this primary function of a bug tracker.  But it seems to be peculiarly hard to find the link.
