The next version will have a configurable default for $HISTSIZE in config-top.h. If you (or a distribution) wishes to increase it to 50000, it will be easier to do.

It's 2018 and disk space is cheaper and faster than 35 years
ago when the 500 default was set.

Every unix user using bash+console on a daily basics the first thing they do after installing an OS is tweaking HISTSIZE on the their .bashrc.
