hi mats - sure, feel free to change the project description/name/anything you have control over as you see fit, that's why they are there :).

thanks for understanding. happy hacking!

Okay. Again, this is no problem. I think this item can be closed. I'll open a new request if ever a new name gets decided (which isn't impossible) and until then "recaged" should work fine.

I assume I can still change the project description and name without it causing any problem?

/Mats

hi mats - thanks for the considerate reply and explanation. despite everything, though, i still feel leery of "rcx". when i first saw your mention of it, i thought "oh, something about regex".  at this late date, i don't think any three-character name is comprehensible -- it could mean anything.  obviously other sites feel differently, but that's how i feel about this one.

if you decide to migrate everything to tuxfamily, that's perfectly understandable ...

all the best,
karl

Thank you for your reply.

Regarding the name on the web server, it is not really necessary to change it as the project now got its own website (hosted by tuxfamily).

I understand your point about too short names, and I was concerned that it would be an issue. Unfortunately I am unsure about a longer name. The name "rcx" does have a longer (internal/unofficial) version, as the project originally was known as "RollCageX" ("Rollcage" being the name of a series of racing games it's aiming at replicating). Around the time I registered it on savannah, I began changing the name to "ReCaged" to remove the reference to proprietary software and to prevent trademark (and similar legal) troubles. I guess it would be a longer alternative, but I suspect you will agree on both concerns.

It was only recently I even considered changing the name again (after other people involved with the project said they preferred the original name). After talking about it on #fsf (irc) and mentioning "RCX" as an alternative to "RollCageX," it seemed like the best idea. Although it's short, it's not (except regarding a certain lego device) used for any software I know of and also liked by others in the project, as we used to use it as a short version of the old name years ago.

Please understand that I'm not writing this to demand that this name should be accepted. I have much respect for savannah (and gnu, fsf) and completely understand that you prefer longer names. I just wanted to write this reply explaining my thoughts regarding the name since you took the time to reply to my request. If you feel that it's not an acceptable name, I could still use the current name on savannah (after all, http://recaged.net is still the official url for now). Or I could migrate the git and download repos to tuxfamily (where the project is listed as rcx).

Anyway, Have a nice day!
/Mats

Hello Mats,

Renaming projects on GNU Savannah is a manual process, but doable.
The one issue that will possibly take longer is changing the name on the webserver (i.e. "http://recaged.nongnu.org" and "http://www.nongnu.org/recaged" as these are not directly accessible by Savannah administrators).

Having said that, GNU Savannah's resources are limited, and one such resource is project names - names must be globally unique.
As a result, we try to avoid adding new projects with too-short names (2 and 3 letter names).
A longer, descriptive name is much preferable.

Please let us know if you have a preference for longer. more descriptive name than "rcx".

Regards,

Hello, would it be possible to change the name of my project from "recaged" to "rcx"?

It has a git and download repository which I suspect can make the process more difficult.

There's no hurry, but if it would possible I would really appreciate it.
