Thanks Karl,

I am unable to find what was wrong with my installation, but things now work again. Some times ago a fresh new checkout did not help. Quite weird. Please close, seems I'm not allowed to.

Hi Jean -- only cvs is supported for web repositories.  It's a long-term desire to change that, but it won't happen soon.

If it works for other people i your project and not you, it seems probable that it is something at your end.  Can you use any CVS repository?  I.e., perhaps your firewall is blocking cvs?  maybe try making a fresh checkout from scratch, in case something is awry in your CVS files?

Sorry ...

Seems others can commit, so we could update the web site. I conclude there is something weird with my desktop, but I don't know what. May be our web repositiory might be migrated to svn or git?

Hi Jean,

Would you mind if I added myself to your project so I could try directly committing to your cvs repository?

That's the only real way I can begin diagnosing the issue here.

-z0 does not help. Actually I'm trying to commit changes to index.html

I'd like to add another data point wrt CVS weirdness for updating web pages.  A couple days ago (2011-06-05), for Guile-PG, i did a commit to update all the web pages in one shot.  Almost all of the files updated, except one: the top-level index.html.  Unfortunately, i did not capture the output of that command, but the result is evident if you examine the repository:

http://web.cvs.savannah.gnu.org/viewvc/guile-pg/?root=guile-pg

If you visit that URL, you can see that index.html-data is recently updated, but index.html is not.  (Incidentally, all the doc/*.html files are properly updated.)

Now, when i try to do "cvs update" or "cvs status", i see:

$ cvs status
ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host
cvs [status aborted]: end of file from server (consult above messages if any)

Is there any other info i can provide to help resolve this?

Hi Jean -- sadly, I don't see anything obviously strange about your www repo.  Maybe try checking it out with -z0?  I've seen firewalls and network connections choke on the compression.  If that doesn't get around it, let us know.

cvs still failing, not formy project (I use svn there) but for the web site.

Output is:

$ cvs commit
cvs commit: Examining .
cvs commit: Examining 3d
cvs commit: Examining 3d/manual
cvs commit: Examining 3d/manual/figures
cvs commit: Examining calc
cvs commit: Examining calc/manual
cvs commit: Examining calc/manual/figures
cvs commit: Examining crystal
cvs commit: Examining crystal/manual
cvs commit: Examining crystal/manual/figures
cvs commit: Examining paint
cvs commit: Examining paint/manual
cvs commit: Examining paint/manual/figures
cvs commit: Examining reference
cvs commit: Examining spectra
cvs commit: Examining spectra/manual
cvs commit: Examining spectra/manual/figures
cvs commit: Examining table
cvs commit: Examining table/manual
cvs commit: Examining table/manual/figures
296

and there it hangs for ever (or at least until I kill it).

Jean, is cvs commit still failing for you?

Sorry for the trouble.  I just tried a commit to the web repository of one of my nongnu projects (listhelper), and it went through ok.  Is it still failing for you?  And what is "296"?  That's the entire output from cvs?  Confused.

Looking at the /webcvs/gchemutils/gchemutils directory on the server, I don't see anything immediately unusual, unfortunately.

Commits to jean_brefort@cvs.savannah.nongnu.org:/webcvs/gchemutils don't succeed, cvs just displays 296 and waits.
