From my reading of this, it is a feature request. I have
marked it as such, so it can be evaluated for the next (or
later) release.

That should work by
- create an admin account first, give it the same username
 like your real admin
- use this to create defaults etc.
- then set the authentication type to NIS
- now use your usual login password

It currently does not work however, a fix is already posted

Hi guys, just wondering how to setup phpgw to
authenticate users that are in my passwd file???
Ideally i would like to just have anyone in that file
authenticated if they enter their passwd pass,
however, i can live with having to create an account
for them first. I have tried setting the
authentication method in the setup area to Mail, with
absolutely no luck so far.
This is a major barrier to phpgw use - if an
institution has to enter 100 accounts with 100
passwords again just to get their email, that would be
bad.
Anyways, any help would be appreciated
