One additional note:  I tried the same kernel, initrd, and grub install on two systems, completely identical except for the amount of memory on each.  Everything worked as expected on the 1GB memory system, but failed with the error mentioned before on the 8GB memory system.

I have found a similar problem on my system that was fixed by the patch mentioned by the previous poster.  The problem is reproducible every time before the patch, and works fine after the patch.

Kernel: 2.6.5 (downloaded from kernel.org)
System: Opteron
Toolchain: gcc 3.4, glibc 2.3.2, x86_64, built with crosstool-0.28-rc25

Here is the information you requested from the original poster:

    hexdump -C -n4 -s 0x22C vmlinuz
0000022c  ff ff ff ff                         |....|

Please let me know if you need any additional information.
Thanx.

There is no response from the reporter, even though I sent an e-mail in which I asked him to confirm that this was due to Linux rather than GRUB. So I assume that this bug is not related to GRUB.

This change in CVS:

http://savannah.gnu.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs/grub/grub/stage2/boot.c.diff?r1=1.44&r2=1.45

caused GRUB to complain that the image would not fit in memory. the problem was worked around by:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi/01-0.94-initrdmax.patch?bug=254798&msg=3&att=3

Does anyone have an opinion on the nature of why this happened? I am thinking of adding debug statements...
