I had this problem with gcc from Slakware 9.1, so I upgrade Linux to Slakware 10 and problem is gone. It's gcc 3.3.4 in Slak 10.

Good luck in upgrading gcc... ;)

This is on GRUB 0.96, with GCC 3.3 on SuSE Linux 9.2.
CFLAGS="-Os" doesn't appear to help
