This is very strange to me.

I have: $ gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 3.3.5  (Gentoo Linux 3.3.5-r1, ssp-3.3.2-3, pie-8.7.7.1)

So seem that problem is somewhere else.

I had this problem with gcc from Slakware 9.1, so I upgrade Linux to Slakware 10 and problem is gone. It's gcc 3.3.4 in Slak 10.

Good luck in upgrading gcc... ;)

CFLAGS="-Os" doesn't appear to help
