Headlines does not use any http proxy settings. Therefore it cannot be used behind a firewall which blocks port 80 or does not do any routing nor NAT.

Corresponding source code
I have looked into this one a little more. I can't seem to work out why it works with one but not the other. Can I send you a patch for testing? I only have LANs with transparent proxies :(
