Relaying a suggestion from a co-worker ... when -j and -O are both in use, parallel jobs will be running with their output impounded until completion. The suggestion is that when these conditions are met and one or more jobs fails, the output of the failing job(s) should be released after that of the successful jobs such that error messages land near the end of the build log as they would be in a failing serial build.

Does this does sound like it might be useful and not too hard to implement?
