Well, we would have to use a separate check: whether we can write to directories that don't have write privileges.  It could be done.

features/output-sync and features/temp_stdin fail if "make check" is invoked as root, but they pass when "make check" is invoked as a unprivileged user.

As the test log contains:

    Opened read-only file! Skipping related tests.
    Opened unreadable file!  Skipping related tests.

I think these two tests should be skipped when the suite is run by root as well.
