You are right! I just checked and it didn't give any segmentation fault for me either!!! Then I looked into the commits around that date and noticed that I fixed this bug and pushed it to the main repository on the same day! I had forgot to close the bug here.

I am very sorry for this! This was my mistake. There are many other bugs/tasks you can choose to continue working on ;-). All the programs and libraries use similar constructs, so don't worry, what you have done for this bug so far, can easily be used in other aspects of Gnuastro also ;-).

astcrop --mode=img -h0 --section=6000:7000,6000:7000 hlsp_xdf_hst_wfc3ir-60mas_hudf_f160w_v1_sci.fits
I am running this command . the image dimension are (5250,5250)
so the choosen section is completly outside the image but it didnt generated any error

when I tried to crop the area which is present in the image but has value=0, then the cropped action is done without any error and when I requested the region completely outside the crop then also no error showed but also no file created

That would be great ;-)!

Have you tried reproducing the bug? Or more generally, have you tried installing and running Gnuastro (and in particular the Crop program)?

If you would like to prepare for the Google Summer of Code, we already have a thread with generic information in sr #110195. You can try reading the previous posts there for some good pointers and answers to some questions that you may confront. We can also have generic discussions there. But when you have an issue with this particular bug, please raise it here.

When the requested region in image mode is fully outside of the input data set, Crop crashes with a segmentation fault.
