It would be immensely helpful to users as they gain experience with arch to be able to "upgrade" an inventory tag from names to explict, or from names to implicit, or from explicit to implicit.

This way, no big and long-term impact decisions need to be made at the outset of version controlling a particular file, before the user has the experience to know what he's going to want with respect to inventory tags.  The appropriate type of id tag can be used for that particular moment, and the decision does not become permanent.
