Duplicate of https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?37206 - you can try patches linked there.

You probably also want to use screen-v4 branch, because it's closer to what's in current releases.

Following the steps, I was able to patch 4.21 and make it work as expected on ubuntu 14.04

When I try to apply the patch on the latest dev

4cc0a28 2017-02-16 | merge 2 ifs into one in win_readev_fn (HEAD, origin/master, origin/HEAD, master) [Amadeusz Sławiński]

The patch is not clean. And the screen build from git version still has the same issue.
