There is also a patch pending for VMS for the archives test.

I do not know if git can automatically merge both.

Since [1] landed, the archives test expects the $AR that was detected by configure to to be used.
However, it doesn't actually pass that $AR to the tested make instance, which breaks the test if $AR!=ar.

The attached patch fixes that.

How to test:
export AR=x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-ar # or whatever is sensible on your system
configure && make && make check
