I just committed (rev 8543) a workaround which detects Ubuntu systems using lsb_release. It works in both Ubuntus I tried it and breaks nothing under MacOS/Windows => closing.

Reopen if necessary. To test you'll need to run configure, not make.

Agreed.

We can test for the distribution, see:

http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/6345/how-can-i-get-distribution-name-and-version-number-in-a-simple-shell-script

Can you produce a patch (or commit) that sets this variable if running Ubuntu?

When in ubuntu, the following behaviour occurs in the qt port of TeXmacs (Version 1.99.1):

*The menu is not updated. For example, when starting a maxima session, the maxima item of the menu is not shown.

Such behaviour seems to be related to the following bugs in indicator-appmenu: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-appmenu/+bug/775561

https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/775581

Though this is not really a bug in Texmacs, but in unity's indicator-appmenu in Ubuntu; the following is a workaround:

In the file texmacs (the one that is executed by the command "texmacs") add the following lines:

QT_X11_NO_NATIVE_MENUBAR=1
export QT_X11_NO_NATIVE_MENUBAR

It would be convenient to add those lines in the code if adding them does not trigger other problems. On the other hand, it would be great to have it work with indicator-appmenu, though that is unlikely, since the bug report in indicator-appmenu seems to have a low priority.
