Vala is a language which compiles to generate C code (see: https://live.gnome.org/Vala). It’s currently possible to extract most translatable strings from Vala by telling gettext to treat it as C code. However, not all strings are extractable this way.

Specifically, it’s not possible to extract string literals which are split over multiple lines using concatenation. For example:

_("my " +
"string " +

will result in just “my ” being extracted by gettext.

Similarly, Vala’s verbatim strings aren’t extracted properly. For example:

_("""my verbatim
string literal""")

will result in just “my verbatim” being extracted.

It looks like gettext needs to grow native support for Vala. A reference to the string syntax understood by Vala is here: https://live.gnome.org/Vala/Tutorial#Strings. Vala source files have a ‘.vala’ extension, and the strings are UTF-8 encoded.
