I use §° as command characters too (the Swedish keyboard layout has § to the left of 1, where the US keyboard escape key is, and ° for its shifted state). This works perfectly in non-UTF8 terminals (such as iso-8859-1 or iso-8859-15), but bugs out on modern UTF8 systems. Even when starting screen with -U! What needs doing where if nobody currently has any interest in this bug?

While we're working at supporting multi-byte escapes for screen, we might consider allowing multi-char escapes (such as termcap features) as well.

I used to use °° as command character since it's the only char/key which provides no function for me.  But in utf-8 environments ° is encoded with two bytes.  screen refuses to start and shows the following error message:

"Two characters are required with -e option, not °°."

Actually, since the terminal/console is in utf-8 mode the output looks like:

"Two characters are required with -e option, not °°."

Could you please teach screen to allow °° as command characters?

I tested this with a freshly installed debian lenny without any changes to the configuration.

I think this bug is not related to other utf-8 related bugs in the bug database.

Thank you for screen and your attention to this bug report,
Gregor <telegraph@gmx.net>
