Showing the encoding in the hardstatus doesn't sound like something very useful anyway, to me. I too would rather not add more string escapes unless really necessary. It's enough confusing as it is!

I've taken a policy of rejecting further escape codes, on the grounds that it adds to an already bloated and poorly-scalable feature; however, this one is apparently already in FreeBSD, and has just been added to Ubuntu, so perhaps we should consider it.
