The problem is that -d takes a sessionname as an argument if there isn't already one and there is exactly one argument following but not a parameter (starts with '-'). Which is why the manual states -d -m which works as expected. (well somewhat...)

Not exactly a bug I'd say but could definately use improvement.

What version of screen is this with? I seem to be unable to reproduce this with either 4.0.3 or current development build.

"screen -md /usr/bin/gedit" or "screen -m -d /usr/bin/gedit"
outputs "Must run suid root for multiuser support."

You need to add "-S" option to make screen work properly,
"screen -S foo -md /usr/bin/gedit"
