Hm.  Make is (I think) dumping core because it's running out of memory.  When that happens, make tries to print an error message but because there's no memory left, even simple operations like printing messages (which still require memory to be allocated) can't succeed and you get a core dump.

I tried this with 3.80 and it dumped core after about 5 minutes.  I tried it with the latest beta for make 3.81, and after 45 minutes it was still running.  The memory usage had increased to about 87M which is a lot for make but not very much, really.  I doubt anyone will wait that long before killing make to see what's wrong.

Anyway, if the problem is that there's a recursive eval call I don't know what exactly I can do about this, other than add an artificial restriction on the depth of eval recursion.  The problem with restrictions like that is that they run the risk of being to shallow for some people, and not shallow enough for others (so that you still get out of memory conditions).

I can try to look into a way to allow make to properly fail with an error even in out of memory conditions, though.

What I'm trying to do is pretty hairy but nevertheless nothing I write in a makefile should make make dump core. This little dummy source tree has that affect. From looking at the stack it's stuck in a infinite recursion which is not suprising given the input I'm feeding it.
