In fact, This is in the output you shoud get. The automake system should be expecting a failure here as this is a test of the "assert" macro.
The "bug" is probably some sort of sort of incompatibility between the OS system you are using and the checking mechanism which is part of GNU automake. I know for example cygwin doesn't handle expected failures properly.
See output of "make check" command in attached file. Fails assertion.
PASS: check_svcd1.sh !ASSERT: file testassert.c: line 33 (main): should not be reached XFAIL: testassert ======================================= 1 of 7 tests failed Please report to -email is unavailable- ======================================= make[2]: *** [check-TESTS] Error 1 make[2]: Leaving directory `/mnt/terrance/install/vcdimager-0.7.20/test' make[1]: *** [check-am] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/mnt/terrance/install/vcdimager-0.7.20/test' make: *** [check-recursive] Error 1
