On a Mageia 7 system, unusually the ESP path is /boot/EFI/[EFI/] i.e. the ESP is mounted on /boot/EFI/ ; rather than on the more normal /boot/efi/. (In Mageia 8 both variants are linked).
By chance, this user had an additional spurious empty directory /boot/efi/EFI/, and grub2-install always fails thus:
# grub2-install
installing for x86_64-efi platform
grub2-install: error: cannot find EFI directory
Once the extra directory is removed, leaving just the correct /boot/EFI[/ESP...], the 'grub2-install command works, so is clearly upset by the half-duplicate path.
# grub2-install
Installation finished. No error reported
