Thank you for the clarification and pointing me to the bug #47437.

Or maybe you find that your self-compiled nano does not read /etc/nanorc?  Then see the answer to bug #47437.

Hello Vlastimil,

You are not saying what you are trying to achieve.  What do you /expect/ to see in the output of 'nano --version'?

All options are enabled by default (except debug), so all your --enable-nanorc etcetera are superfluous.  And as Thomas has explained on Stackexhange, you need some -dev package if you want libmagic support (but I would advice against it -- it brings very little and is a major slowdown during startup).

Maybe the documentation (info nano build) should be improved to say that all options except debug are enabled by default and the user should use --disable-something if he/she wants to exclude something?

As described on:

https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/327765/compiling-nano-editor-with-options

I seem to be unable to compile with any combination of options, like

./configure --enable-nanorc --enable-color --enable-extra --enable-multibuffer

always makes a binary with:

Compiled options: --disable-libmagic --enable-utf8

I am unsure as to whether it is problem on my system Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon, but I have verified it in a virtual machine clean installation.

vlastimil@vb-nb-mint ~/Downloads/nano-2.7.1/src $ ./nano --version
