Hi,

I too would like to have a supported way to generate a grub.cfg with LABEL= instead of UUID=

I am using 2.02~beta2 and this does not seems to be possible yet.

My use case is: prepare a baseline bootable system on a USB drive, make an image of it with dd, write that image with dd to several other USB disks.

The attached patches seem to be a good starting point as they do not change the default behavior, unlike #38366.

If the grub developers at least acknowledge the usefulness of the feature, then some of us may be willing to spend some more time on working out the details of the implementation.

Thanks,
   Antonio

There's a use case for this that makes me want it too: backup.

If I periodically clone my HDD to an external one, I'd like to be able to swap them when the internal one fails, like described here: <http://www.jwz.org/blog/2007/09/psa-backups/>. However, with UUIDs in the bootloader I can't do this. With labels I would be able to.

It changes from UUIDs to LABELs in several, unrelated modules which should be configurable separately.

I'm not sure I follow.
Without GRUB_USE_LABEL set "true" it changes nothing.

Are you saying it breaks something un-related ?
If so then could you please explain as I would like to try to correct it.

Otherwise, could you please add a similar feature to grub2 ?

I have used this for about 12 months now with no issues and prefer labels for many reasons.

This patch isn't appropriate since it changes behaviour of several unrelated parts with a single option.

I have attached an updated patch for 1.99 release version, in the hope that this may at least be reviewed.

It would be good in Linux to be able to specify that grub use labels rather than UUID's in grub.cfg, if the user specifies GRUB_USE_LABEL=true in /etc/default/grub.

I have attached patches for grub-mkconfig.in, grub-mkconfig_lib.in and 10_linux.in that achieve this in my system. (rev 2937).

Whilst my patches may have deficiencies and possibly overlook many scenarios that I do not understand, I feel that the principle illustrated is one that is desirable and should be fully developed.

Thanks for your time.

Regards,
Barry Jackson (barjac)
