Revising summary.

This isn't something we can do in just any build without extending our build dependencies to include now-archaic collections of Adobe Type 1 fonts, which are not Free Software.

Font metrics, which are all we care about from these collections, are simple numeric descriptions of coarse properties of glyphs in a font, and are not copyrightable.

In theory someone could extract the metrics from the 2 Type 1 collections we require (see section "Old fonts" of grops(1)), and ship those, but I don't personally see the point since they will seldom change.  Better just to make this part of the boxes-to-tick list of items in our FOR-RELEASE file.

Odds are, once we've got the procedure documented and tested, we'll never, ever have to do it again.  (Adobe has retired the Type 1 format.)

The Unicode Consortium will keep us busier.

Most of the work for (re)building devps font description files from original sources has already been done: see comment 31 of bug #63018.  That comment ends with unresolved questions.

Comment 36 over there gives this context: "Bug #65698 is about maintainer-mode targets for updating afmtodit, hpftodit, and tfmtodit to contain whatever refreshable information we want to include in them."  That task is "likely a prerequiste for" the current ticket, which is "for different maintainer-mode targets that produce font descriptions we check into the repository and ship in distribution archives describing the 'stock' fonts we expect to support for PostScript, LJ4, and DVI output devices."
