I think we can leave the IPv4 syntax in Wget's output as-is, but switch the output for IPv6 to be more compliant. Unlike IPv4, there is a strong standardization on how IPv6 is often printed and we should try to be consistent with it.

The issue with the output changing shouldn't be so bad. We can test it out and see if someone complains about it.

Indeed, wget2's debug output contains

10.124503.288 has 2a02:6ea0:c700::18:443
10.124503.288 trying 2a02:6ea0:c700::18:443...

I get your point.

The output line has the same format for IPv6 and IPv4 where the IP address representation and the port number are printed as two fields separated by `|:`.

E.g. for an IPv4 address, the string is also not as "usually done":

Connecting to example.com (example.com)|93.184.216.34|:443... connected.

I hesitate to change this because the format exists since a long time and we can be sure that changing it will break many scripts.

Rather, I'd like to modernize this in wget2. I see that in wget2 the output is also not quite correct in the debug logs. Currently it is `2a02:6ea0:c700::11:443` and it should be `[2a02:6ea0:c700::11]:443`.

1) GNU Wget 1.21.2
2) wget https://download.qemu.org/qemu-8.2.0-rc3.tar.xz
3) I expected wget to show the combination of an IPv6 and a port like it is usually done in URLs, namely in the syntax [address]:port (cf. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/URL#Syntax ).
4) wget shows the combination of an IPv6 and a port in the syntax |address|:port
